This practical certificate provides learners with horticultural knowledge and skills needed to carry out routine tasks in a variety of contexts. It helps support progression to employment in the horticultural sector and is also designed to meet the needs of the amateur gardener.

Course content

The qualification consists of the following eight topics:

  • Plant Identification – identify a range of plants
  • Plant Establishment – in containers and open ground
  • Plant Propagation – professional propagation
  • Plant Health – identify and prevent a range of threats to plant health
  • Plant Care – garden maintenance plans
  • Plant Pruning – pruning including using hand tools and hedge trimmers
  • Garden Features – maintain a range of features
  • Grassed Areas – establish and maintain turf

Assessment

Assessment is through an online assessment test and in person practical assessment tests. The practical tests involve being observed carrying out a number of practical activities and answering underpinning knowledge questions relating to the units studied. There will also be a plant identification. Winterbourne will support learners in carrying out the online test at home – this cannot be done at the centre. You will need access to a computer capable of running the RHS qualification assessment software as there is not a paper alternative.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements needed to study the Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture, however your application must demonstrate an interest in and enthusiasm for horticulture and gardening. Please also note, that as this is a practical course, it does make physical demands, including digging. Learners must be over the age of 16.

Progression

If you achieve this qualification, you will have gained a range of practical horticultural skills relevant to employment in various roles in the horticultural sector, such as a gardener in private, public, or botanic gardens or parks and urban green spaces. You could progress on to other Level 2 certificates in horticulture or on to Level 3 study.

Please note, successful completion of both Certificates at Level 2 entitles you to achieve the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture.

Additional Information

You will be required to wear suitable clothing for working outside and to provide your own protective footwear and gloves. Once the assessment dates are finalised, they cannot be rescheduled. The online assessment is also unable to be rescheduled. There will be resit opportunities for an additional fee.
